Introduction

Migrating to a new SAP S/4HANA release involves much more than applying software updates or adapting custom code. A successful migration begins by understanding the functional, technical, and architectural changes introduced by the target release and assessing their potential impact on the existing SAP landscape.

One of the most important references provided by SAP for this purpose is the SAP S/4HANA Simplification List.

The Simplification List documents hundreds of changes affecting business processes, data models, custom developments, APIs, integration scenarios, extensibility, and system architecture. It is an essential resource for architects, developers, functional consultants, and technical leaders involved in SAP S/4HANA migration projects.

However, due to its size and level of detail, transforming its content into practical guidance for real-world projects can be challenging.

As part of the preparation for a migration from SAP S/4HANA 2020 to SAP S/4HANA 2025, I conducted a comprehensive review of the SAP S/4HANA 2025 Simplification List and organized the information into a structured technical and functional guide.

The result is the document I am pleased to share with the SAP community.

Purpose of This Guide

The objective of this guide is to provide a structured interpretation of the SAP S/4HANA 2025 Simplification List, helping SAP professionals understand the migration landscape from both technical and functional perspectives.

Rather than replacing SAP's official documentation, this guide complements it by organizing the information into practical topics that support:

  • Enterprise Architecture

  • SAP Solution Architecture

  • Migration Planning

  • ABAP Modernization

  • Clean Core Strategy

  • Custom Code Assessment

  • Technical Governance

  • Risk Analysis

  • Test Planning

  • Technical Decision Making

The guide is intended for:

  • SAP Enterprise Architects

  • SAP Solution Architects

  • SAP ABAP Developers

  • Functional Consultants

  • SAP Basis Administrators

  • Integration Specialists

  • Technical Leads

  • SAP Migration Teams

What You'll Find in This Guide

The document includes:

  • SAP S/4HANA 2025 migration architecture.

  • Technical and functional analysis of key Simplification Items.

  • Relationship between Simplification List, SAP Readiness Check, and ATC.

  • Clean Core strategy.

  • Custom Code Migration considerations.

  • Module-by-module impact analysis.

  • Enterprise Architecture recommendations.

  • Technical governance practices.

  • Risk assessment matrices.

  • Migration decision workflows.

  • Testing strategy.

  • Practical ABAP migration examples.

  • Architecture diagrams.

  • Best practices gathered throughout the analysis.

Scope

This document represents an independent technical analysis prepared for educational purposes and professional knowledge sharing.

It is not an official SAP publication and should always be used together with SAP's official documentation, including:

  • SAP S/4HANA Simplification List

  • SAP Readiness Check

  • Maintenance Planner

  • SAP ATC

  • Custom Code Migration

  • Relevant SAP Notes

  • Official SAP Product Documentation

Every SAP landscape is different.

The actual migration impact depends on multiple factors, including:

  • Source SAP S/4HANA release.

  • Installed components.

  • Activated business functions.

  • Industry solutions.

  • Custom developments.

  • Integration landscape.

  • Business requirements.

Although this guide uses a migration from SAP S/4HANA 2020 to SAP S/4HANA 2025 as its reference scenario, the methodology, analysis approach, and many of the recommendations can also be applied to migration projects starting from other SAP S/4HANA releases.

Why I Decided to Share This Work

Throughout my experience, I have learned that successful SAP migration projects begin long before the first transport request is imported or the first line of code is modified.

They begin with understanding the target architecture, identifying potential risks, assessing technical impacts, and building a migration strategy based on reliable information.

That is why I decided to publish this guide.

My intention is to provide a practical reference that helps SAP professionals better understand the SAP S/4HANA 2025 Simplification List and supports the early planning stages of migration projects.

If this work contributes to reducing analysis time, improving technical discussions, or helping other professionals better understand SAP S/4HANA migration challenges, then it will have fulfilled its purpose.

Recommended Reading Order

To get the most value from both documents, I recommend the following sequence:

  1. Read the Technical & Functional Analysis of the Simplification List to obtain a structured understanding of the most relevant functional, technical, and architectural changes.

  2. Use the Official SAP Simplification List to validate release-specific details, implementation considerations, and SAP-supported guidance.

Together, these documents provide both a practical interpretation and the official technical reference needed to support SAP S/4HANA migration planning.
